St Charles School was given a Highly Commended award in the 'School of the Year' category at the annual Hyndburn Community Sports Awards ceremony on 18th September. The school was nominated by Marie Fenton and Rachael Gavin (pictured) for its services to sport in the community and the continuing efforts to dedicate more time to physical fitness.
Through curricular sessions children can partake in games sports such as football, tennis, hockey, netball, basketball, dodgeball, tag rugby, cricket, table tennis, gymnastics, swimming, dance and athletics. There is also indoor and outdoor circuit training focusing on health and fitness and using different equipment such as ladders, shuttle runs, jumping over hurdles etc.
Extra curricular clubs are held both at lunch time and after school and cater for all children from reception to year 6. These offer up to 17 hours extra physical activity each week.
Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and The Arts, Cllr Ken Moss, was on the judging panel and said, "It was a tough call this year as the standard of schools put forward was very high. Although St Mary's Primary in Oswaldtwistle was given 'School of the Year', we felt that the nomination from St Charles's was so strong that it deserved a special Highly Commended award. I'm doubly pleased because they are in my own ward of Rishton!"
