Lancashire County Council made a decision to stop serving unstunned meat in schools last year but they've been unable to enforce it because they didn't consult with the public first and a legal challenge was brought by the Lancashire Council of Mosques.
Abdul Hamid Qureshi said, "It's very important that people understand and think about the process itself, what the animal is going through. When we talk about stunning and not stunning, what is that process exactly? When you give an electric shock, as you know when you've had one, every muscle is intensified in the process. How can that be a better experience?"
Currently schools can choose whether to provide either stunned or non-stunned halal in their school meals and non-stunned halal meat is provided in 27 schools to 12,000 pupils.
Hyndburn Borough Council Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Ken Moss, said, "Halal meat is a very emotive subject and whilst most of us have eaten it at some point or other through choice at a takeaway, people are understandably uncomfortable when that choice appears to be removed. I would urge everyone to take the opportunity to find out more and make their views known."
The consultation runs until 7th March 2018 and can be found here:
