A litter pick along the canal towpath organised by the Rishton Prospects panel took place a week later than planned due to inclement weather. Several bags of waste were collected along the Rishton stretch of the waterway during the exercise on Saturday 12th March.
Prospects member Colin Cooper said, "We do these litter picks periodically and we always end up with quite a few Council rubbish sacks filled even along this short stretch. It's just a pity that so many people allow their dogs to foul along what really is a beautiful piece of Rishton scenery."
A separate litterpick was organised by Norden High School and this took place a day earlier on Friday 11th March. 18 bags of rubbish were reported to have been collected by the pupils in the streets surrounding the high school.
Cllr Ken Moss, who lives on Bridge Street adjacent to the school, said, "I was working from home that day and saw the kids out full of enthusiasm. It's been criticised as people doing the Council's job but I remember going on school litter picks 30 years ago and there were no gloves or pincers then! I think the odd exercise like this is a good way to instil a bit of pride in children and I applaud the school."
The Prospects group meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.00pm in The People's Centre and new members are encouraged to come along.
