Rishton resident Steph Clarkson organised a cleanup of the Rishton section of the Leeds-Liverpool canal on Sunday 23rd August and the event was a great success.
Steph, 23, said, "I've been travelling but I came back to Rishton recently and was appalled at the amount of litter along the canal. I advertised a cleanup day and I'm so pleased at the response. We've had the cleaning barge out today and the grappling hook has been fishing out larger items. We've got so many bags of rubbish picked up today, it looks a lot better now."
The Canal and Rivers Trust sent out a cleaning barge to clear items from the far bank whilst volunteers picked litter form the towpath and the nearside of the water.
Over 20 people gave up a few hours of their time, including volunteers from Prospects, The Great Harwood and Rishton Rotary Club and several members of the public.
Cllr Ken Moss said, "Rishton Prospects adopted our section of the canal some years ago and whenever there is a cleanup operation there is always good support from the community. We've dragged allsorts out of the water today, including trainers, tyres and even a scooter. I just wish people would treat the canal with a bit more respect. It's something for Rishton to be proud of, not a dog toilet or a dumping ground. Hats off to Steph for caring enough to organise this and make a difference."
