POLICE STATEMENT ON POST OFFICE ROBBERY

Police detectives have launched an investigation after the recent robbery at Rishton Post Office.

The robbery happened at shortly after 5.30pm on Friday, June 5th when the postmaster was closing for the day. Three offenders wearing white CSI-style suits and full face masks entered the post office through the back door, threw a sheet over the member of staff and tied him up.

They then stole a substantial amount of cash from the safe and made off in the victim’s Vauxhall Corsa which was found abandoned in Eachill Road a short time later.

Police are trying to identify a couple who were walking up George St from High Street and stopped to allow the stolen Vauxhall Corsa drive out of the garage from the Post Office and turn right onto George Street.

The postmaster, 31, was rescued when his sister attended the post office when she couldn’t get hold of him. Fortunately he was not seriously physically injured.

Detective Inspector Simon Upton, of East CID, said: “This was a brutal and pre-planned robbery involving the use of violence against the postmaster who has been through a traumatic experience.

DI Upton said, “Fortunately robberies of this nature are still relatively rare and we are carrying out a thorough investigation to bring to justice these offenders. I would appeal to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact the police.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 1229 of June 5th, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers.org
