Polling stations open at 7.00am tomorrow across Hyndburn to elect both local Councillors and the MP for the borough. For the most part, we try to be politically neutral on Rishton First but we would urge everyone in Rishton to vote Labour and keep the team together.
Cllr Clare Cleary is standing for a second term to stand alongside Cllr Harry Grayson and Cllr Ken Moss as the local representative. Over the past four years, she has solved many personal problems for people and been involved with police and community groups, notably the Rishton Festival Committee.
In 2014, Clare was promoted to the Cabinet (one of the six most senior positions on the Council) in charge of Housing and Regeneration and has spearheaded the canalside project to improve Rishton's derelict land along the water corridor. She has also overseen hundreds of prosecutions across the borough relating to poor housing and tightened up enforcement of landlord licensing.
Fellow ward Councillors, Harry and Ken, urge people to vote for Clare in tomorrow's election and keep a good local representative rather than voting for a little-seen UKIP candidate or the negative Conservative campaign with a candidate who lives in Clayton-le-Moors.
Graham Jones has been MP for Hyndburn since 2010 and has been of invaluable help to the borough Council. He was instrumental in leading the Scrap Metal Bill through Parliament which forces rogue traders to be registered and this has led to a signifcant drop in thefts. He has also worked to improve standards in rented housing and helped to secure the re-opening of the Todmorden Curve which will directly link Accrington and Manchester on the railways for the first time in over 40 years.
Graham is Accrington born and bred and has worked and lived in the borough all his life. He believes in Hyndburn and has pushed for improvements to the area despite the borough facing the harshest Government cuts out of all the Councils in the country.
In contrast, his Conservative opponent has long been associated with Ribble Valley and has run a campaign which has poured scorn on many areas of Hyndburn, blurring the lines between what an MP has the power to change and what a Council is responsible for. The Tories have wheeled out celebrity guest stars to prop up their campaign, offered a list of election promises which Labour already implemented and made promises of more money which has been so far denied to the current administration.
Please help us to keep a positive team together - vote for your local Labour candidates on May 7th.
