A recent meeting of the Planning Committee included an application for the removal of a car parking space from the site of the new Co-op on Harwood Road to make access easier to the new dentist outlet which has already been approved in the adjacent unit. The applicant stated that the dentist currently situated on High Street would not move into the new unit unless one disabled bay was moved from its present position to make the front of the shop more visible.
Cllr Ken Moss made representation at the meeting on behalf of residents and stated that the car parking provision was already below what was recommended and that there had been disruptions at peak times, particularly during the evening rush hour. A request was made that if the application was accepted then a new entry/exit system was brought into force and suitable road markings were paid for by the applicant to reduce congestion as this has been the biggest problem caused by the store.
Speakers also included resident Jeff Scales of Harwood Road who objected to the application and a representative of the applicant from Hurstwood speaking in favour.
The committee was split 50/50 and committee chairman Cllr Harry Grayson ultimately used his casting vote to reject the application on highways grounds.
A full set of papers can be viewed here and the application is listed under item 3:
