A footpath has been upgraded connecting St Albans Road and Shawbrook Close. The old footpath had fallen into serious disrepair and so £6,000 was allocated from Rishton Area Council funds. This was matched from other departments to bring the path up to adoption standards which means that it now falls under the care of Lancashire County Council and will not cost HBC any more money to maintain.
Following various incidents and complaints about a small number of horse riders, A-frames (as can be seen at various points along entrances to the canal towpath) were to be installed to prevent riders from using the path. Problems in other areas where such frames have restricted access to buggies and wheelchairs led to the installation of slightly different frames which will still stop horses but be less clumsy for other pedestrians.
The footpath is now forbidden for use by horse riders and a sign has been erected at the St Albans Road end showing this.
A dog waste bin also remains in place along the path for walkers to use and this is emptied each Tuesday.
