RISHTON AREA COUNCIL - 8th JULY 2010

Thursday 8th July saw the latest meeting of the Rishton Area Council at St Charles' School.  Area Council is held once every three months and is a public forum for residents to come and raise any issues they may have, plus an opportunity to comment on how the town's money is being spent.

Several projects have now been approved, including a new litter bin for the footpath at the bottom of Grasmere Close, two benches and a litter bin for the Ladybird Garden on Chapel Street, a new lamp post and bollard for Eachill Gardens and a new bus shelter for Hermitage Street.  The council leader, Peter Britcliffe, has cut the budgets for all Area Councils in Hyndburn but it was agreed that a further bus shelter for the other side of Hermitage Street would be pre-approved for the Rishton budget in 2011-2012 next year.

Cllrs Ken Moss and Harry Grayson both voted to halt the Rishton Remembered project until alternative funding could be found as it was not felt that £960 could be justified at this time.  Several plaques have already been funded and worked on and the scheme will be completed in due course.

Funding was approved for maintenance of the Ladybird and Parker Street gardens as in previous years and also for the annual Christmas trees that are placed in brackets over the shops along High Street.

Several other issues have been raised in the past few weeks and Cllr Ken Moss undertook a walkabout on Saturday 10th July to document each problem, all of which have now been reported to Hyndburn Borough Council for cleansing:
  • Bridge Street - flytipping in back alley
  • Shuttleworth Street - demolished back wall atracting flytippers
  • High Street - flytipping and builders' rubble in back alley behind shops
  • Allan Critchlow Way - flytipping in canal from no. 26
