Friday 7th May saw the ballot boxes for the local elections opened in Hyndburn Sports Centre and Ken Moss won in Rishton with a majority of 151 votes. Credit is due to both opponents for a gentlemanly campaign, particularly Ross Sourbutts who was extremely gracious in defeat and shared several drinks with Ken and Harry Grayson later in the evening. An unprecedented 68% of people voted in Rishton (the highest turnout in the whole of Hyndburn) and the final results were as follows:
- Ken Moss (Labour) - 1535
- Ross Sourbutts (Conservative) - 1384
- Chris Fisher (Independent) - 380
Councillors Harry Grayson and Ken Moss now look forward to a new majority vote getting more done for Rishton and a town meeting will be called within a month for all residents to meet and discuss use of the village funds.
In the national elections, Hyndburn Labour leader Graham Jones won with 41% of the ballot and a clear majority of over 3000 votes to become the new MP for the borough. He is expected to stand down as councillor for Peel ward within the next week and call a by-election so that he can concentrate on his new position.
