ESPLANADE ROSEBED
The Rishton councillors were recently told that there would be an approximate shortfall in Hyndburn Borough Council's open spaces budget of £1,600 which meant that the planned replanting of the rosebeds on the Esplanade would not take place. Several ideas were put forward by residents including a donation scheme whereby any resident could pledge £10 towards a new rose to remember a loved one. However, Cllrs Ken Moss and Harry Grayson received an e-mail on 18th November which now confirms that the money has been secured for new roses to be planted in February or March 2011.

Ken,Harry great blog.
ReplyDeleteYou may want to speak to the gardner responsible. He could get far more value out of the £1,600 than planting roses. There are other plants that will provide more colour for longer.
Thanks for your post. It sounds like a lot but when you take into consideration just how many are needed and then factor in man-hours it's not a million miles off. Traditionally, the Esplanade has always had roses and we've talked with the public about other things but everyone wants to keep it as it is. The other thing to consider is that roses don't really like being planted where other roses have been so it will need lots of fertiliser to help them get going. Thanks for the query though, I wish more people would question council spending!
