The terrain is reasonably level along footpaths and lanes but expect some very muddy conditions through the woods. We plan to walk from Helmshore to Ramsbottom along the valley of the River Irwell. We should arrive in Ramsbottom in time for lunch. There are a number of cafes for those who wish to dine indoors and, if the weather is kind we will spend about an hour and a half in Ramsbottom before making our way back to Helmshore. If people feel that they cannot make the 3.5 mile return journey to Helmshore, then arrangements can be made to collect and return walkers to their chosen destination. ring a packed lunch, drinks are available from various cafes in Ramsbottom.
Waterproof boots are absolutely essential as some areas are liable to be muddy and rainproofs may be helpful if the weather is unsettled.
