The former Piggy Park area off Devonshire Road is shortly to be turned into a growing area and a Cabinet decision on the tenancy is expected on 2nd December.
The park has long since been disused and Cllr Harry Grayson started proceedings with community group representatives in 2014 to turn it into a series of allotments. The Rishton Councillors allocated £10,000 from Area Council funds as a start up and this will be used to install perimeter fencing and buy equipment needed to convert the land.
Cllr Ken Moss took over as Chair of the Piggy Park Food Growing Association in summer 2015, with Jeff Scales as secretary for the group. Agreement has now been reached with the Prospects Foundation to take over the lease so that insurance liabilities are covered.
Former HBC flower planters from across Hyndburn have been allocated to the project so that they can be used as raised beds which will generate income for the group and allow it to be self-sustaining.
Further details will be released when groundwork starts in 2016.
