ST CHARLES WINS PRIMARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR

St Charles School beat off stiff competition to win the 'Primary School of the Year' category at the annual Hyndburn Community Sports Awards ceremony on 18th September 2015. The school was nominated by Marie Fenton and Rachael Gavin (pictured) for its services to sport in the community and the continuing efforts to dedicate more time to physical fitness.

Through curricular sessions children can partake in games sports such as football, tennis, hockey, netball, basketball, dodgeball, tag rugby, cricket, table tennis, gymnastics, swimming, dance and athletics. There is also indoor and outdoor circuit training focusing on health and fitness and using different equipment such as ladders, shuttle runs, jumping over hurdles etc.

Extra curricular clubs are held both at lunch time and after school and cater for all children from reception to year 6. These offer up to 17 hours extra physical activity each week.

Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and The Arts, Cllr Ken Moss, was on the judging panel and said, "I'm delighted that St Charles has once again won an award and it is a testament to the teachers at the school. Marie paid a hearty tribute to the very hard work which Rachel has put in over the past few years and it is obviously showing. Well done!"

The annual awards ceremony takes place at Accrington Town Hall and is a chance for the public to nominate sports clubs and facilities in a number of categories. It was presented by The Bee Radio's Simon Brierley and the guest speaker was Kenny Saunders (centre), a former footballer and champion of grassroots football.
