OLD RISHTON TUNNEL RE-OPENED

**NOTE - THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOLS DAY POST**

The old underground tunnel linking Dunkenhalgh Abbey with Tottleworth Docks has been re-opened for the first time in over 70 years and exploratory works are now taking place.

Professor Bernice Summerfield is heading the project and said, "No one is entirely sure what the tunnel was constructed for or why it was walled up again but it's very exciting, a bit of local history literally right under our feet."

Cllr George Parr said, "We're pleased to give this the go ahead and want to see it become a tourist attraction in time. Rumours persist that it is haunted and it is understood that there may even be a third entrance somewhere under the Rishton turnpike at George Street."

A more detailed statement on the team's initial findings is expected at midday.

  1. Very interesting they always said there was a tunnel linking the hermitage to the Dunkenhalgh when we lived in the hermitage
