Workmen who were replacing the windows uncovered the sign which dates back to when the building was part of the old Rishton Co-operative shops and housed a cobblers. People's Centre member Ken Holden, now 85, said that the sign must be around 100 years old as he remembers it clearly when he was a young boy.
Elaine Holden (left) introduced the afternoon before a few words from Lesley Jackson (right), who was also presented with a bunch of flowers for all her help in recent renovations.
Lesley said, "We have done nearly all the things we hoped to over the past ten years with small grants and help from volunteers. We have created a disabled toilet, revamped the kitchen, put in a new boiler and heating, got new blinds, curtains and windows, new flooring, started work on a complete renovation of the upstairs flat and even got a projector for community presentations. The sign is just one more thing to add to the list and I think it looks splendid."
Mayor Munsif Dad officially unveiled the newly-restored sign at a dinner for members and said, "Good afternoon and welcome to the Clog Department! I have many happy memories of Rishton from my working days when I would go for fish and chips at the shop over the bridge. Congratulations for all your hard work on restoring this sign and making an excellent community centre."
