The Centre is undergoing major refurbishment upstairs to create new office space for local charities and organisations. Funding applications and works have been largely due to the help from the Rishton and Great Harwood Rotary Club, with local contractors being brought in for jobs such as replacing the windows.
Two of the old signs from The Centre's former existence as a shoe shop were uncovered beneath the fascia boards. Whilst one bearing the imprint 'Shoe Dept' was unable to be saved due to extensive damage, the other (shown here) was removed intact.
Will McCaffrey, who worked on the new windows, contacted the Rishton Councillors and said, "Although I'm a down to earth tradesman I still appreciate the value of historic and iconic items. I took it down with the greatest of care so people can at least now enjoy what others did many years ago."
Cllr Ken Moss spoke to Margaret Standing, secretary of The People's Centre. He said, "The Centre are keen to preserve the sign and I have spoken to them about placing it indoors. It will be installed shortly and there is likely to be an official unveiling in the near future."
