The Lancashire Constabulary Dog Unit issued the following statement recently, "Over recent months there has been an increase in the theft of dogs from gardens, dogs of all breeds and sizes. This is advice for all of the county but thefts have increased in the east of the county. People need to be vigilant and report any suspicious people or vehicles using the Police non-emergency telephone number 101. Advice to dog owners... Secure all gardens and gates if your pets are left out and ensure your pets are micro-chipped. Please ensure collars and tags include a name/telephone number."
There have also been a number of cats and kittens which have gone missing, although some of these would appear to have either got lost or been allowed out at a very early age and wandered off. Thanks to resident networking on Facebook, several animals have been reunited with their owners.
However, perhaps the most heartless incident occurred on Westwood Avenue recently when a young cat was taken, tied in a plastic bag and thrown onto Blackburn Road into the traffic. Fortunately, the cat was spotted before any harm came to it and the owners found it safe and well by going through the Cats Protection League website (http://www.cats.org.uk/index.aspx).
All residents are urged to make sure that their pets are collared, chipped and secure when left alone.
Its come to something when you darn't even let your pet enjoy the garden without fear of it being stolen!
