Flytipping is becoming an increasing issue in the village, with reports coming in to the Rishton Councillors on a weekly basis. The problem appears to have got worse since the recent Lancashire County Council decision to close the recycling centre in Great Harwood and the introduction by the Government of much larger taxes for legitimate waste disposal firms to tip at sites such as Whinney Hill. Illegal dumping costs HBC a lot of money each year and it is putting a severe burden on the Council. However, many flytippers have been caught as waste material can usually be traced back to the source either by Environmental Inspection or information from the public.
The Council offers a free service for collection of bulky goods and if anyone requires disposal of larger items then this can be arranged at no cost by calling 01254 388111.
