Today marks the 60th anniversary of the death of King George VI and the accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II. To mark the celebrations, an extra bank holiday will take place on Tuesday 5th June 2012. By moving the Spring Bank Holiday (the last Monday in May) to 4th June, this will result in a four-day holiday in honour of the Diamond Jubilee, coinciding with the Queen's Official Birthday in the United Kingdom, also on 4th June.
The Rishton Councillors have been looking at how the village can be decorated for the event and it is hoped that a series of flags can be erected in the brackets above the shops used for Christmas trees. It is intended that flags can also be flown in future for other significant events such as the Olympics, the World Cup and St George's Day.
