CHRISTMAS TREE DAMAGED BY VANDALS

The living Christmas tree in central Rishton has been targetted by vandals and has left it permanently damaged.

Several branches have been snapped off while other have been bent and broken which now means they are at risk of disease and further decay. The attack took place sometime between 4.00pm on Thursday 24th July and 10.00am on Friday 25th July. A request has been sent to Greenbank police station to see if the culprits have been caught on the CCTV camera on High Street.

Cllr Ken Moss, who led the move to have permanent trees planted last year, said, "The two Christmas trees have grown considerably since December and have taken root well. I was so pleased because it ensures that children growing up now will be able to watch their own children enjoying the same tree in years to come. We don't have the money to keep replacing trees, we are trying to provide something lasting for very little money."

He added, "This is just brainless vandalism. It isn't going to hurt the Councillors or the government, no one is going to give these idiots a 'better' tree as a result, all they have done is spoil what could have been something beautiful in our village that everyone can enjoy."
