Ken Moss has been beaten in the Rishton election by the Conservative candidate Michael Miller who takes over as Councillor from next week. Cllr Miller lives in Green Haworth and his contact details are not yet known.

Ken said, "It's not a shock, I've upset a lot of people by being very direct on contentious issues. I will miss it, of course, but I'm extremely busy with work of my own so I certainly won't be short of something to do. All the best to my successor and heartfelt thanks to my Labour colleagues without whom I couldn't have done half of the things I've managed to over the years."

Council Leader Miles Parkinson said, "We've lost a seat in Rishton which we have held for a number of years. We are very disappointed to lose Ken. He’s been a very hard-working cabinet member."

Two thirds of voters stayed at home for the local elections, with the voter turnout just 33.3 per cent across the borough.

Labour now hold 26 seats on the council, compared to just 9 for the Conservatives.

Today is local election day and the polling stations are now open until 10.00pm.

The Rishton Councillors try for the most part to be as non-political as possible but today we would ask everyone in Rishton to vote Labour and elect Cllr Ken Moss for a third term.

Ken said, "This is a purely local election and nothing to do with national politics so we would ask people to go and vote based on who they think will do the best for Rishton, not the party leaders in Westminster. Hyndburn Labour have balanced the books and delivered £10m in investment across the borough without borrowing. Please don't reward the Tories for cutting our money, vote Labour today."

With just one day left until the polling stations open, Rishton Labour would urge everyone to vote for Cllr Ken Moss tomorrow and keep the current team of Councillors together.

Ken said, "Myself, Clare Cleary and Jeff Scales make a good team as we all bring different skills to the table when issues come up. We've worked so well together over the past few years and two of the three of us now hold Cabinet positions which has enabled us to have better control over developments in Rishton."

He added, "It's a very rewarding job and I would like to keep doing my bit for the public. Please support me for a day and I'll support you for another four years."

Polling stations open on Thursday morning at 7.00am and will remain open until 10.00pm.

If you are registered to vote by post and still haven't returned your ballot papers there is still time to do so.

Postal voters can still use post boxes until the last scheduled collection on 3rd May or alternatively drop their completed ballots in sealed envelopes at their nearest polling station.

Cllr Ken Moss said, "There are currently around 300 postal ballots in Rishton which have not been returned and we would encourage people to use their vote. You can still cast your vote up till 10.00pm on May 3rd by going to a polling station."
**THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOLS DAY POST**

A police box is set to arrive in Rishton in a bid to fight crime and deter antisocial behaviour. There are currently only two operational police boxes in England, the others being at Earl's Court in London and Boscombe in Dorset.

The new box will be constructed from steel and weigh over 2 tonnes, serving as a relay post and also a temporary means of incarceration if and when required. There will also be four cameras contained within protected mounts on the outer shell.

Commissioner David McDonald said, "The British public call box is iconic and has proven a reassuring feature in other locations. I'm proud to have been involved and have received lots of positive comments from the public."

The new box will cost £40,000 taken from Area Council funds and appear in the Autumn.

Hyndburn residents will be able to recycle more easily soon, when the Council replaces the current sacks and box recycling system, with two new wheeled bins for each household instead.

Councillor Paul Cox, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, said; “This new system means that we will all be able to recycle much more efficiently and our streets will be cleaner, as the rubbish that sometimes blows out of the sacks and boxes on windy collection days will be contained within the wheeled bins, which are also much easier for residents and collection crews to handle.

Councillor Cox added; “We’re bringing in this new system after listening to feedback from residents who have asked us to make recycling simpler and to move collections to the back streets. The new system means households will only have to split their recycling between the two bins. The brown bin will be for paper and cardboard and the blue bin will be for glass, cans and plastics. Providing bins will also make it easier for residents in terraced properties, as collections will take place from the back street, where their grey wheeled bins are already presented. This means no more carrying boxes and bags through the house.”

Council Leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, added; “Providing the bins is a big investment for the Council which will help drive up our recycling rate. Recycling diverts waste from landfill so reduces the cost of waste disposal and helps keep Council Tax down.”

Information packs will start being delivered from April and the new bins will be delivered during May and June. Households in the North of the Borough should continue to present their recycling in their sacks and boxes until the new scheme starts on the 18th June and households in the South of the Borough should continue with their sacks and boxes until the 9th July”.

A tree planting ceremony to dedicate a new cemetery on Lee Lane to Rishton & Great Harwood residents took place today.

Construction work at the new cemetery, which will for the first time offer a natural burial option, is almost complete. Council Leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, dedicated the new cemetery to the people of Rishton & Great Harwood on Monday 19th March, when he planted a flowering cherry tree there.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony, Cllr Parkinson said; “I’m extremely pleased to dedicate this new cemetery to the people of Rishton and Great Harwood. It’s fitting that we plant a tree here today, as, for the first time in the Borough; we can now offer a natural burial option, an environmentally friendly alternative, which will also create a woodland and habitat in this countryside location.”

Cllr Parkinson added; “This new cemetery has been built to provide residents of Rishton and Great Harwood with burial space for the next hundred years, as the old cemetery is almost full. It will provide areas for coffin burials for all denominations, as well as areas for ashes burials and the new natural burial option.”

Cllr Parkinson also thanked a team of local volunteers who are building a new Pennine style dry stone wall at the cemetery, saying; “Thank you to the volunteers who are making this excellent heritage feature for the future of the cemetery.
